Matthew Donald is an avid hiker. Despite being a new father, the 40-year-old still finds time in the morning and evening to get in his 20,000 steps a day. So it was not unusual for him to be at the park on Tuesday evenings. His father, Dean Donald, said his son was known to put on good shoes quickly.

Anders said shortly after 8:30 p.m. that he texted his son. But a text message sent some time later did not receive a response.

"We're both big Braves fans. So when the Mets were down in the 8th inning, I texted him the score screen," Donald said.

Although his father didn't mind not getting a quick response from his son, his thoughts were blown when he got a phone call after a few minutes.

"I got a call from North Fulton Hospital, a nurse there, and she asked me if I was Matthew Donald's father," Donald said.

The nurse went on to explain that Roswell police found Matthew's phone calls and that he was the last person her son texted. He also explained that his son was found severely beaten.

Roswell police say just after 9:30 p.m. officers responded to the park at 10495 Woodstock Road. Officers spoke to a jogger who told police he found Matthew passed out on the side of the road. At first the runner thought he might be homeless, but as he got closer he saw the extent of his injuries, not to mention the pool of blood around him.

"We came right away. When we got here, we were able to get into the ICU and see him," his father said, making the nearly two-hour drive from Lake Oconee to Roswell. "He was badly beaten, he was unconscious, he was on a ventilator, I mean, it's really, really hard to look at him."

Matthew was unable to tell officers or anyone else what happened, but investigators spoke with several witnesses at the park. They also pull all the information from the license plate reader at the entrance to the park.

Meanwhile, his wife remained by his side as he recovered in the intensive care unit. His father and mother have been living in the city to take care of the couple's 7-month-old son.

His father says there is good news. It looks like Matthew won't need major surgery or have his jaw closed.

His father said: “He's still on a ventilator, his swelling has gone down, he's got big wounds on his head, his forehead, his eyes are swollen shut.

While investigators wait for Matthew to recover enough to answer their questions, his father has questions of his own.

Matthew's father said his wallet, keys and ID were still with his son when he arrived at the hospital.

Roswell police have a designated base for the park. The railway tracks are well lit and the lampposts sit on the dirt track, so police are asking if anyone saw anything suspicious or unusual between 8:30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. Tuesday night to call the police.
